AMD EPYC 2 Rome What We Know Will Change the Game

Here is the quick summary of what we learned today about the AMD EPYC 2 “Rome” generation:

Up to eight 7nm x86 compute chiplets per socket.

Each x86 chiplet up to 8 cores

64 cores confirmed AMD EPYC Rome Details Trickle Out 64 Cores 128 Threads Per Socket

There is a 14nm I/O chip in the middle of each package

This I/O chip will handle DDR4, Infinity Fabric, PCIe and other I/O

PCIe Gen4 support providing twice the bandwidth of PCIe Gen3

Greatly improved Infinity Fabric speeds to be able to handle the new I/O chip infrastructure including memory access over Infinity Fabric

Ability to connect GPUs and do inter-GPU communication over the I/O chip and Infinity Fabric protocol so that one does not need PCIe switches or NVLink switches for chips on the same CPU. We covered the current challenges in: How Intel Xeon Changes Impacted Single Root Deep Learning Servers. This can be a game changer for GPU and FPGA accelerator systems.

Socket compatible with current-generation AMD EPYC “Naples” platforms.

Although not confirmed by AMD, we will state that most if not all systems will need a PCB re-spin to handle PCIe Gen4 signaling. So existing systems can get Rome with PCIe Gen3 but will require higher-quality PCB for PCIe Gen4.

Claimed significant IPC improvements and twice the floating point performance per core.

AMD's EPYC 7002 line-up is built off the Zen 2 microarchitecture that was introduced last month with the Ryzen 3000 series processors. So by now you are likely to know about the 7nm manufacturing, PCI Express 4.0 support, significant IPC uplift over Zen/Zen+, initial hardware mitigations against Spectre, better AVX2 performance, and many other architectural improvements. With the EPYC Rome processors there are up to eight multiple CPU dies per socket paired with a 14nm I/O die yielding up to 64 cores (and 128 threads) per socket. Yes, that's while Intel's Xeon Cooper Lake will only offer up to 56 cores per socket -- next year -- and ignoring the Xeon Scalable 9200 AP series that aren't readily available and not to mention the price or thermal on that front.

Looks like AMD EPYC 7002 Zen2 Rome cpus would be best paired with Linux 5.2 Kernels and GCC 9 compiler - though from benchmarks AMD Ryzen 3000 series Zen2 was better with GCC 10 compiler coming soon. FYI, Centmin Mod 123.09beta01 Nginx and PHP-FPM have GCC 7, 8 and 9 compiler support and will be testing GCC 10 later as well

With EPYC 7002, AMD continues talking about their open ecosystem and for that matter open-source and Linux certainly got brought up a lot during the reviewer briefings. With the EPYC 7002 series, you should expect to find great Linux support at launch. At least from my testing with their "Daytona" reference platform there hasn't been any real Linux compatibility woes.

There are some sore points like not having AMD Zen 2 temperature monitoring support only now with the Linux 5.3 kernel, the IDs for the EDAC driver were only added to Linux 5.2, and some other additions fairly late, but it's for non-core functionality. If you are booting up an EPYC Rome server, it should "just work" on any reasonably recent Linux distribution but certainly the newer stack will yield better support and performance.

Short of items like the Zen temperature monitoring needing the latest kernel, in my weeks of testing the EPYC Rome processors on their Daytona reference platform I have not encountered any Linux issues. The AMD EPYC processors/microcode also isn't affected by the systemd RdRand issue that has affected early Ryzen 3000 systems causing boot issues with newer Linux distributions - this hasn't been an issue at all with EPYC 7002.

On the compiler support, GCC 9 has initial support for Zen 2 with the "znver2" target. As covered recently on Phoronix, there was finally the cost table update and new scheduler model added for GCC 10 and now back-ported for GCC 9.2. It's a pity AMD wasn't able to get those bits into GCC 8 for seeing more widespread compiler support in time for launch-day, but hopefully we'll see a better turnaround for Zen 3. I've certainly made it known to AMD that it would be nice if their enablement timing jived better with these different kernel / compiler release schedules and for the versions to be used by the major Linux distributions. AMD will also be issuing an AOCC compiler update shortly with Zen 2 support

Some big Cloud hosting providers already announced they are intending to use AMD EPYC 2 Rome 7002 series cpus i.e. Twitter and Google and even Linode, OVH. Good thing Centmin Mod 123.09beta01 and newer have been working on AMD EPYC specific optimisations similar to Intel specific optimisations when specific Intel cpu models are detected

AMD EPYC 7H12 cpus coming AMD EPYC 7H12 Announced As New 280 Watt Processor For High Performance Computing - Phoronix

The AMD EPYC 7H12 is a 280 Watt SKU, their most power hungry EPYC processor ever, and as such is primarily designed for server deployments with water cooling. Compared to the 225 Watt top-end AMD EPYC 7742, the 7H12 model raises the base frequency from 2.25GHz to 2.6GHz and the boost frequency is 3.3GHz, which is actually 100MHz lower than the 7742 model. But the rest of the specs besides the clock adjustments and TDP are in-line with the EPYC 7742: 64 cores / 128 threads, 256MB L3 cache, 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, 8 x DDR4-3200 memory support.

This water-cooled server processor is, of course, designed for the high performance computing (HPC) use-cases and similar. The EPYC 7742 already easily beats the likes of the Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 "Cascade Lake" while the 7H12 with the extra 350MHz on the base frequency should provided an added oomph. In at least Linpack, the EPYC 7H12 delivers around 11% higher performance over the EPYC 7742.

Phoronix does more benchmarking Linux 5.6 Tests On AMD EPYC 7742 vs. Intel Xeon 8280 2P With 100+ Benchmarks

These tests are intended to offer a fresh look at the Linux 5.6 performance between the Xeon Platinum 8280 and EPYC 7742 2P servers and besides the new kernel version what kicked off this round of testing as well was for some last minute testing/evaluation of the big Phoronix Test Suite 9.4 feature update. In particular, checking in on many of the tests once more and also for more test data to push through the visual improvements to the PDF generator and graphing code. So take these results as you wish, even if it just means for checking out the PDF generation improvements.

With these tests on Linux 5.6, nearly 200 benchmarks were run as part of this test run. Keep in mind with all these tests there is a mix of both single and multi-threaded workloads, with this not serving as a CPU review but just passing along these data points for reference while also showing off the PDF and graphing changes with Phoronix Test Suite 9.4.
