Amazon’s web hosting services are among the most widely used out there, which means that when Amazon’s servers goes down, a lot of things go down with them. That appears to be happening today, with Amazon reporting “high error rates” in one region of its S3 web services, and a number of services going offline because of it.

Trello, Quora, IFTTT, and Splitwise all appear to be offline, as are websites built with the site-creation service Wix; GroupMe seems to be unable to load assets (The Verge’s own image system, which relies on Amazon, is also down); and Alexa is struggling to stay online, too. Nest’s app was unable to connect to thermostats and other devices for a period of time as well.

Isitdownrightnow.com also appears to be down as a result of the outage.

Amazon has suffered brief outages before that have knocked offline services including Instagram, Vine, and IMDb. There don’t appear to be any truly huge names impacted by this outage so far, but as always, its effects are widespread due to just how many services — especially smaller ones — rely on Amazon.

There’s no estimate on when service will be restored, but Amazon says it is “actively working on remediating the issue.”

Amazon cloud sputters for hours, and a boatload of websites go offline

Amazon Web Services, which powers a whole bunch of websites and online services, has been struggling today, and numerous sites that rely on Amazon infrastructure have gone offline as a result. Appropriately enough, "Is It Down Right Now?," a site that tells you whether other sites are down, has been struggling to stay online. Other apparent victims include The AV Club, Trello, Quora, IFTTT, Open Whisper Systems, and websites created with Wix.

Amazon itself was initially having trouble providing updates to its service health site. But the company posted this note at 2:35pm ET: "We have now repaired the ability to update the service health dashboard... We continue to experience high error rates with S3 in US-EAST-1, which is impacting various AWS services. We are working hard at repairing S3, believe we understand root cause, and are working on implementing what we believe will remediate the issue."

S3 is Amazon's Simple Storage Service. The problems are originating from an Amazon data center region in Virginia.

Further updates from Amazon reported a full recovery in "S3 object retrieval, listing and deletion," but continued problems in adding new objects to S3.

(UPDATE: Amazon said at 5:08pm ET that everything had returned to normal.)

Everything from Slack to Quora to your own beloved Gizmodo saw major disruptions. Before Down Detector itself went down, the site showed outages on the tier 1 network Level3 in most major population centers in the United States.

Amazon will probably not release info later on about what happened, it was probably the same thing that happened with the github programmer that accidentally deleted GBs worth of files. Although I do wonder if they were hacked, no one's taken any credit and posted about it on twitter yet.

Yesterday for the first time it seemed to me the internet was dying. I never did imagine i was using so many services dependent on aws s3.

If this was a mistake, someone will get fired.

Typo, opps.

Unfortunately, one of the inputs to the command was entered incorrectly and a larger set of servers was removed than intended. The servers that were inadvertently removed supported two other S3 subsystems.

Amazon outage: bad typing stuffed the internet

According to analysis by Cyence, the four-hour outage cost some of the biggest companies in the world up to $211 million in down time and lost performance.

Web monitoring performance company Apica reported 54 of the top 100 internet retailers were affected by the outage.

While only three websites went totally offline — Lululemon, One Kings Lane and Express — top etailers affected included the Disney Store which was running 1165 per cent slower, the US Target store slowed by 991 per cent and Nike dropped performance by 642 per cent.

Other services affected included Slack, Quora and the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Amazon site was not affected by the outage, although Amazon could not update its status page at one stage so that the dashboard incorrectly showed it was operating at full performance.

Amazon says in the post mortem that it has implemented safeguards so that any incorrect input won’t bring the whole cloud server down again.
