    AlmaLinux OS 8.3 is released.
AlmaLinux OS 8.3 is rpm compatible with CentOS 8.3 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.3.

This is the first release to fill the CentOS 8 gap, as CentOS Linux 8 ends in December 2021.

Wow thanks for the heads up. Make sense CloudLinux folks would be able to get AlmaLinux out first seeing as they pretty much had the OS fork done for CloudLinux OS.

Yeah. But releasing distros isn't the biggest thing. Releasing updates and even more critical cve based updates without much delay is.

And that was the biggest issue for most RHEL forks in the past.

Oracle is releasing updates around the same day as Red Hat. Cloud Linux could deliver the same.

The big question becomes. Can an organization without paid employees, just like Rocky Linux deliver the same. Not only the first weeks after releasing the distro, but also years later.

Update after update. Holiday or no holiday. Rain or sunshine etc

But AlmaLinux and thus CloudLinux does have paid employees AFAIK? Or you referring to RockyLinux? There CloudLinux OS is a commercial enterprise/money maker so hopefully that translates to AlmaLinux updates too. I'd imagine they'd script and automate the removal of CloudLinux packages when they build AlmaLinux updates.

Just 2+ days until AlmaLinux stable 8.3 OS is released. I plan to setup AlmaLinux on an Upcloud VPS for testing. Upcloud has a guide for using your own OS iso images which I plan to follow Using your own install media - Tutorial - UpCloud :)

Yeah both. CloudLinux does have paid employees to do the job.
    RockyLinux does not.

There are many possibilities in the field of automation in terms of releasing updates or releases. Yet it remains partly human work.

For example. The list below are the packages that CentOS adapts compared to upstream RHEL. The rest is repacking.

Of the thousands of RPM packages, relatively little needs to be adjusted. Still, CentOS is often busy with releases for a long time.

That's why I often wonder aloud how Rocky is going to organize this when delivering updates and releases in the future.

For example, a critical update on a public holiday etc.

Which volunteer is going to work on his holiday?
This will be difficult for Rocky. Not at CloudLinux/Alma. There is just someone on duty.

What I want to see for Centmin Mod is eventually have a mobile app with buttons to automate tasks i.e. upgrade nginx/php-fpm etc. Would be nice to have to OS update/builds hehe.

    @eva2000

If i am not wrong i think there was some issues related to some packages for Centos 8 and Centminmod didn't work on it....

As the new Rocky Linux and Alma linux will be a 1:1 copy i think that Centminmod will still have an issue ....

I don't know if Centminmod can and when will be able to work on any of them....

Hope that you can do your magic :)

This CentOS 8.x - Centmin Mod CentOS 8 Compatibility Worklog applies to CentOS 8, AlmaLinux 8 and Rocky Linux 8 AFAIK they'd have same issues I will need to test and work in compatibility for Centmin Mod. Most likely will start with AlmaLinux 8.3 given that it's released officially in 2+ days time. Though will be slow as I only work on this in my spare time. If I was paid and doing this full time would be much faster heh.

You are not the usual suspect :) but a super volunteer. What I want to see is centminmod compatibility with el8 in general.

As it is not yet clear which new soon to be released distro, will inherit the user base from CentOS.

Hope to see Centminmod to work as expected at Centos 8 Alma or Rocky or both :)

For current RHEL, Oracle and CentOS -8 users.

There is a migration script available to migrate to AlmaLinux.
No need to install custom ISO's or tricky recovery installs if you don't want to.

Spin your VPS or dedi with CentOS 8 and follow the instructions below.

In order to convert your EL8 operating system to AlmaLinux do the following:
    AlmaLinux/almalinux-deploy

Most users will start with whatever they can choose from their supplier.
Only a few percent choose their own installation.

Because almost 0 provider is providing Oracle Linux at default,
even though it has been on the market for years and available for free.

First I want to see again what providers are going to choose and thus provide.

There is CentOS Stream (Of course, Red Hat hope that users will automatically update 8 to Stream.), Rocky, Alma and Oracle to choose.
Forking is fun. What you don't want to see is defragmentation.

Just like binary compatible Android. Which is a big rotten swamp nowadays.

I can see AlmaLinux becoming a default distro offered by web hosts eventually - well I hope so :)

Yup. Biggest plus for AlmaLinux is that it is backed by cPanel.
So lot of users will start asking for Alma next year, should the provider not supply it.

Yup with cPanel supporting AlmaLinux, uptake will be fast and wide :)

Excited to work on Centmin Mod's AlmaLinux 8.3 compatibility support. At least looks like EPEL 8 repo has much better package parity with EPEL 7 now. At least OpenDKIM package is available in EPEL 8!
