Yup heard the news - and it was first from my fellow Cloudflare MVP colleagues too

Will be interesting to see what Akamai can bring to Linode's product offerings :D Beefed up DDOS mitigation would be nice :)

    Was wondering the same.

Whilst also wondering how/what the eu courts arguing ownership not location matter in hosting. Either way I was/am toying with a skip to a euro friendly host. Probably upcloud. This news does not accelerate that, just another pin in the do I, don’t I.

change can be good… I hope it is. So who acquires digital ocean?

As long as Akamai doesn't screw it up.
Linode is clearly aimed at developers. Akamai on large enterprise.
I wonder what a developer should do with large enterprise solutions at first glance.
There is a big difference between these two groups.

It doesn't seem to me that the average developer is looking forward to an Akamai DDOS solution that can ward off 100+ millions of attacks.
That's of little use to the average developer.

In the short term. As far as I'm concerned, Akamai should adds their own data centers to Linode. Amsterdam for example. Linode is one of the few VPS server based companies without Amsterdam as server option.
Which is after all one of the larger internet metropolises of the world.

When I look at the sheets Akamai sent to investors.
Seems like they want developers to offer the complete Akamai portfolio.
And thus hope that Akamai gets a foothold within his or her (the developer) employer and some new markets.

So I did see that coming.
Had expected a purchase/sale even much earlier.
Perhaps Covid played a part in this.

For now, no one. Digitalocean (DO) has grown way too big.
DO has raised an awful lot of money from investors on several occasions.
All of these investors obviously want to have some say in a sale and make a profit.

Linode was the ideal bite. They've been around for years. Were even one of the first, serious players in VPS server land. They offer all similar services to DO.
And was owned by a single owner. 900m $ is, in this day and age, a laughing matter for a major party like Akamai.

Upcloud is good but Linode's disk resilience layer is one thing that keeps me coming back for production sites - it's so easy for Linode or myself to initiate Linode to Linode VPS server migrations, VPS or disk cloning, backups and restores. And since, I've done it enough times to be confident in it's abilities. But all my test servers is done on Upcloud, with my blog being on Upcloud too https://blog.centminmod.com/ :D

There's still some potential for overlap. Developers may work for larger companies and most folks and developers will only recommend what they know or have experience with. So Akamai giving those developers a taste of their product offering might be one way. I see it sometimes with developers who only ever use Amazon AWS EC2, that is the only platform they'd ever recommend to their clients/bosses even if their are cheaper and better suited alternatives.

+1 Definitely - will be interesting to see what Akamai bring to the table!

True, they're self funded and probably the debt to equity ratio would of been much lower than the likes of DigitalOcean!

Exactly the same in different wording.
What I wrote under my text you wrote as a quote.

Akamai wants to be able to offer a complete range.
Where developers bring Akamai's products into the boss's office.

The fact that the first quarter, 2022 is ending next month and Akamai itself expects to complete the Linode purchase within the first quarter, says more than enough.

    Akamai completes acquisition of Linode.
Very beneficial to me. That would mean location among others: Brussels, Amsterdam etc. Where Akamai is already located.
Which are high on my Linode list.

By the way, Linode is in most of the datacenters where Akamai also has a place.
So that shouldn't be too difficult when transferring the current Linode servers.

Akamai will probably be buying, trucks full of AMD EPYCs atm LOL.
Very hard to get good servers right now, due to Ukraine and chip shortages/Corona.
The first factories are already closed in China because of Corona (again) and because of the war as extra above Corona the prices are skyrocketing.

One advantage is a company like Akamai gets priority.
They have their connections and not unimportantly almost unlimited money.

Is there any news about Linode and its new hardware?
When I spin new VPS servers in Frankfurt (I'm from Germany).
The best I can get is a VPS based on a relatively old Xeon Gold.
Then Vultr and Digitalocean are just a bit more interesting with Epyc 7nm.
    + Germany as location option.

Not yet, I'd imagine with pandemic and supply chain tightness, it wouldn't be as quick as we'd want for their deployments.

    Hi eva2000,
I have seen your posts over at the XF community. :)

I was reading your blog post here and came across your comment that said:

"However, Akamai’s pricing isn’t very transparent and is hidden behind their free trial offers and contact us messages. So I am hoping Akamai’s acquisition of Linode will expose some of Akamai’s product offerings in more bite-size affordable pricing for Linode users."

I do not use Linode as I require someone to manage my server, but I did want to point out that my current host offers Akamai and they have pricing on their site. This may give you a little idea of what Akamai's pricing structure might be like. I am not sure if it is OK to post a link to their site, but if needed please remove it if not appropriate. I use their CloudFlare offering as it is quite cheaper.

    https://www.liquidweb.com/products/add-ons/performance/

I hope this helps some? I kind of wanted to try the Akamai offering as I remember way back in the days when I first got online seeing the akamai.net URLs on big websites and stuff. They have been a round a long time. It just seems they are rather expensive and that has kept me from using them. :-(

Cheers thanks for sharing that - hoping Linode's Akamai pricing isn't that high !

I think I have seen in the past that there were some CDN companies that offered several different companies including Akamai in their options. I don't remember who they were, I'd have to go do a search on that and try to find them. And yes, it is rather pricey, not sure if it is worth it or not? I've been very happy with Cloudflare. I use the Argo service, Automatic Platform Optimization, and it seems like one other thing but I don't recall right now what that was. I have my site broken down into Wordpress and XF forums. :)

I see that Azure has them as an Akamai option as well. It's probably cheaper with them than with Liquid Web.

    Competition is always good :)

Akamai has big plans riding on Linode it seems https://www.bizety.com/2022/08/22/akamais-compute-upside-is-unprecedented/
Q2-2022 earning highlights related to Linode
So Akamai expanding Linode's datacenter/POPs will benefit them too as they move their existing hosting in the cloud to Linode as well. Will be exciting to see what Linode will become :)
